The 2019 National Youth Week (NYW) celebration will take place in Kamanjab, Kunene Region, from 23rd to 27th April under the theme, Youth against Wildlife Crime. 2019 NYW activities will be geared towards supporting government efforts in combating poaching of Namibia’s wildlife. Activities that will take place among others include, presentations on illegal trafficking of wildlife, poaching (for pots and for commercial purposes), human wildlife conflict, conservancies and its potential for income generation for the youth. Participants will build two kraals in the conservancies and will mend the fence destroyed by elephants in the park.
A committee comprising of members from the National Youth Council of Namibia and Ministry of Environment and Tourism, met under the chairmanship of the Executive Director of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), Mr Theophilus Nghitila, to map the way forward. MET is an important stakeholder in this year celebration.
The National Youth Week is a statutory obligation in Namibia’s youth development calendar. 27th April of each year is marked as the National Youth Day and the whole week is marked as the National Youth Week. The National Youth Day and Week is a joint responsibility of the three Government institutions entrusted with youth matters, i.e. Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service, National Youth Council and National Youth Service.
Last year, the National Youth Week was celebrated in Okahandja, Otjozondjupa Region with focus on Road Safety and in partnership with Namibia Road Safety Council and Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA).
